Special Education Eligibility

Before a child can receive special education services at Central Cove, he or she must be deemed eligible based on guidelines set by the state of Utah.

Every month the staff at Central Cove screens children as part of the state's Child Find program to begin this determination process. Students whose screening results indicate potential concerns are evaluated for special education services.

Central Cove's Child Find process is as follows:

  • Screenings are held every six weeks: Aug 25; Oct. 6; Dec. 1; Feb. 2; and March 22

  • Parent stops by the preschool for a prescreening packet.

  • Parent completes and returns the packet to the front office. Completed packets are due no later than the Friday one week before the screening date.

  • Once the completed packet is received and scored, an appointment for the screening is scheduled.

  • If a review of the prescreening packet indicates the need for a full screening, the parent and child come to the preschool for screening. The appointment takes about 45 minutes to an hour. It includes a variety of developmental skill areas, including hearing and vision checks.

  • A letter explaining the screening results is sent about one week after the appointment.

  • If the screening results show potential concerns, the preschool scheduler contacts the family to set appointment times for appropriate evaluations.

  • Following the evaluations, the parent and preschool team meet to go over the results and discuss the child's eligibility for special education.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child's development or Central Cove's Child Find process, please contact the preschool. We are happy to help provide answers and additional information.
