The Uintah School Board on Thursday voted to appoint Vernal resident Denise Maynard to the board, filling a vacancy for District #2.
The unanimous vote came during a special business meeting held at the Uintah School District Office in Naples.
“I have served on the Uintah Middle School Community Council for three years and I have seen many changes happen within the district,” Maynard told the board in her letter of interest. “I love working alongside administrators, teachers and students to achieve the best overall communication and opportunities.”
Vernal Mayor Doug Hammond lent his support to Maynard’s application to fill the District #2 vacancy.
“The amount of experience Mrs. Maynard has with different aspects of education gives her a unique perspective,” Hammond wrote in a letter to the school board. “This is important for someone who is charged with making decisions which impact our students, parents, educators and the community.”
Maynard is a 1993 graduate of Uintah High School. She and her husband, Jason, have three children. Two have graduated from Uintah High and attended college at Southern Utah University. The couple’s youngest child is a sophomore at Uintah High.
Immediately following the board vote Thursday night, 8th District Court Judge Clark McClellan administered the oath of office, swearing Maynard in as the representative for District #2. Maynard’s appointment ends Dec. 31. She will need to be elected by District #2 voters in November to remain on the board.
The vacancy on the school board in District #2 was created earlier this year when the Uintah County Commission realigned district boundaries, as required by law. With the realignment, board President Dave Chivers now represents District #1 and board member Harlan “Scoot” Wilkins serves as an at-large member until his term expires on Dec. 31.
