“Receiving a National Gold Council of Excellence Award reflects the amazing dedication of the students and school to make their community a better place,” said Ronn Nozoe, CEO of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which is the parent organization of the NASC.

“Uintah High School has gone above and beyond in elevating student voice to ensure they are establishing a positive climate and culture, as well as fostering academic and social growth for all,” Nozoe said.

During the 2023-2024 school year, Uintah High’s student leaders have sponsored a car show as a fundraiser, supported Vernal’s Night to Shine, created and displayed a heart for every UHS student for Valentine’s Day, participated in the Ute Indian Tribe’s Trunk or Treat event, hosted blood drives for the American Red Cross, attended state and national leadership conferences, and planned dances and other events for the student body. Student council members also show new students around the school, lead lessons and activities, and serve as ambassadors for Uintah High in the community.

“This national leadership award shows how much our student council cares about our school, and how hard we work to make it a better place,” Uintah High Student Body President Ryan Mansfield said. “I truly believe each and every student council member wants to make a difference and this recognition reflects the impact of what we have tried to achieve this year.”

In addition to Mansfield, the members of the 2023-2024 UHS Student Council are: Vice President Kate Slaugh, Secretary McKenna Tesar, School Publicity Officer Evan Lewis, Liaison Officer Kate Larson, Historian/Senate Leader Ethan Pierce, Activities Officer Caleb Hadlock, School Spirit Animal Wilson Liesik, Senior Class President McKenzie “Mac” White, Senior Class Vice President Yordi Woodford, Junior Class President Emily Bake, Junior Class Vice President James Kinsey, Sophomore Class President Rickell Zufelt, Sophomore Class Vice President Kade Richens, and Freshmen Class representatives Kameron Crane, Thomas “T” Schlosser III, Parker Strasburg and Emmalee Woods. UHS teacher Blaire Martindale serves as the council’s advisor.

A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Gold Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community.
