During the business meeting, the board recognized the district’s students of the month for April 2024. The students of the month for April 2024 are Jack Buckner (Central Cove Preschool); Samantha Emmett (Ashley Elementary); Easton Mugford (Davis Elementary); Cadynce Hall (Discovery Elementary); Sage Olsen (Eagle View Elementary); Liam Perry (Lapoint Elementary); Hadlee Peterson (Maeser Elementary); Alice Evans (Naples Elementary); Tyson Weaver (Uintah Middle School); Aurora Etchen (Vernal Middle School); Margaret Rousseau (Uintah High School); and Charlesia Johnson (Ashley Valley Education Center/Uintah Online).­

Congratulations to these outstanding students and to everyone who supports them!

The board also approved the hiring of Ryan Maughan as the new director of Special Programs. Maughan is currently the superintendent of the Emery School District. He will officially begin his new role with the Uintah School District on July 1; however, he will begin the transition into his new job in May. Ag Building Open House
The district will host an open house and ribbon cutting for the Uintah High School Agricultural Sciences Building today, April 12, from noon to 2 p.m. The ribbon cutting will take place at 1 p.m. A light meal will be provided.

Emergency Drill on April 20
First responders from Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah counties will participate in full-scale emergency drill on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drill will simulate a crash between a school bus and a tractor-trailer truck. It will take place on US-191 north of Vernal near Cart Creek between mile markers 378-381. The district is providing a decommissioned school bus for the drill. Again, this is a simulated crash. No one will be injured. Emergency managers are asking people to avoid the area during the drill.

VMS Parent Night
Vernal Middle School will host a free presentation about navigating social media and cellphone use by teens. The presentation is geared toward parents, students ages 13 and up, and interested community members. It will be held on Monday, April 22, from 6-7:30 p.m. in the VMS auditorium.

UHS Student Council Earns National Award
The Uintah High School Student Council has been recognized as a 2024 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC).

“Receiving a National Gold Council of Excellence Award reflects the amazing dedication of the students and school to make their community a better place,” said Ronn Nozoe, CEO of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which is the parent organization of the NASC.

“Uintah High School has gone above and beyond in elevating student voice to ensure they are establishing a positive climate and culture, as well as fostering academic and social growth for all,” Nozoe said.

Celebrations
The Uintah High Choir program attended the Region Chamber Choir and Solo & Ensemble competition on March 20 at Timpanogos High School. The soloists and groups who received superior ratings and qualified for state were Polyphony (chamber choir), Annabelle Johnson (piano solo), Lauren McKee (vocal solo), Sydney Huber (vocal solo), Allison Despain (vocal solo), and Annabelle Johnson & Allison Despain (vocal duet). Others receiving both superior and excellent ratings were Emily Swonger (vocal solo), Kara Isom (vocal solo), Adaline Pettit (piano solo), Ty Thomas (mixed ensemble), Kambri Gleason and Emily Swonger (vocal duet), Kara Lalliss (vocal solo), Kara Isom (mixed ensemble), Adaline Pettit (mixed ensemble), SoVoce (mixed ensemble), and Adaline Pettit (vocal solo). Hailey Rasmussen and Abigail Slaugh represented the Uintah High Choir instrumental program and received superior and excellent scores.

The Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards announced its Top 10 nominations in all categories on March 25 and Uintah High Theatre picked up 11 nominations. The nominees are Cade Marshall, Best Actor for Something Rotten; Aurelia Harrison, Best Actress for Something Rotten; Benson Baumgarten, Best Supporting Actor for Something Rotten; Shayna Cook, Best Cameo Performer for The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical; Ethan Pierce, Best Cameo Performer for Something Rotten; Lily Carlson, Best Student Scenic Design and Best Student Costume Design for The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical; Chris Piner, Best Director for Something Rotten. Uintah High Theatre’s production of Something Rotten also picked up nominations for Best Musical, Best Ensemble and Best Costume Design. The winners of the Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards will be announced on Saturday, May 4, at the Eccles Theatre in Salt Lake City.

Six Uintah High students competed and placed at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference on March 26-27. Addilyn Foley took first in Teach or Train; Madilynn’s Barnes took third in Fashion Design; Adaline Pettit and Aisling Neale each earned silver medals in Fashion Construction; Lamona Blackhorse earned a bronze medal in Fashion Construction; and Elly Young earned a bronze Medal in Repurpose & Redesign. Addilyn qualified to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Seattle, Washington, this summer. Madilynn qualified as an alternate and will attend if either the first or second place winners in her category are unable to go.

Uintah High held the annual Mr. Uintah and Miss Uintah competitions on March 27. Josh Cheshire won the Mr. Uintah title, with Jed Vandewark finishing second and Hank Rogers finishing third. Rogers won the People’s Choice Award. Raegan Hall won the Miss Uintah title, with Rylee Crane finishing second and Ritchlyn Anderson finishing third.

On Wednesday, Superintendent Dr. Rick Woodford and others surprised UHS student Lily Carlson in her 5th hour art class with the news that she had won the district’s Student Art Competition. Lily’s oil painting, titled Good Old Chuck, was selected from a number of exceptional entries that were submitted by students from across the district. It will serve as the cover art for the invitations and program for this year's USD Employee Recognition Banquet and will be displayed in the district office alongside the artwork of past winners.

UHS Junior Promenade & Prom
Uintah High School will host its annual junior promenade and prom on Saturday. Promenade will be held in the school’s Main Gym. Participants need to be at the high school by 4:50 p.m. The audience should be seated by 5:25 p.m. The performance will begin at 5:30 p.m. and should conclude by 6 p.m. There is no charge to attend promenade. It will be streamed live on Channel V6 at www.channelv6.com.

Prom will take place from 8-10 p.m. in the Main Gym. Tickets are $15 for singles and $25 for couples. They can be purchased at the UHS Finance Office. Tickets won’t be sold at the door. Attendees must have their student ID to enter the dance.

UHS Athletics
The Uintah High Boys Soccer Team hosts the Mountain View High Bruins today for a region match. The JV game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game, which should kick off about 5:30 p.m. The varsity game will be streamed live on the Uintah High Athletics YouTube channel.

The Uintah High Baseball Team is playing a doubleheader against the Timberwolves at Timpanogos High School today. The Uintah High Track and Field Team is also on the road today, competing in the Phoenix Invitational at Farmington High School.
