“Christina will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the UMS principalship,” Uintah School District Superintendent Dr. Rick Woodford said. “She has a clear vision for middle school students and is well prepared to lead the faculty forward in continuous improvement.”

The selection process for the new UMS principal was rigorous, Woodford said. After a traditional interview, four finalists participated in a “fishbowl” activity where they worked together on two leadership tasks while being observed, then rotated between six groups of UMS faculty members, answering predetermined questions from each group.

“The faculty was able to provide feedback to the selection committee,” Woodford said. “After some deliberation, Christina became the committee’s unanimous choice.”

Viar-Jolliff will succeed current UMS Principal Sharon Shipton, who is retiring after 37 years with the district.

"I am honored and excited to take on this new adventure,” Viar-Jolliff said. “I have been blessed to work with amazing individuals in the district and look forward to making Uintah Middle School home."

Viar-Jolliff is finishing her 21st year in education and her 5th year with the Uintah School District, where she has served as a school counselor and assistant principal. Prior to her family’s return to the Uintah Basin, Viar-Jolliff worked as a school counselor and site administrator and served in leadership positions in school districts outside Utah.

Viar-Jolliff holds a bachelor's degree in psychology, a master's degree in educational leadership and a pupil personnel services credential in school counseling.

Woodford introduced Viar-Jolliff to the UMS staff on Monday before classes began. The Uintah School Board is expected to formally vote on her hiring as the school’s next principal during its June 18 business meeting. Viar-Jolliff will finish out the school year at VMS and assume her new role at UMS on Aug. 1.
